Trung đại

Trung đại là thuật ngữ do học giới hiện đại áp dụng cho giai đoạn trung gian trong tiến trình lịch sử nhân loại. Tuy nhiên, tùy mỗi ý thức hệ lại có cách phân biệt mốc thời gian khác nhau.

Thuật ngữ[sửa]

Trung đại (中代) là lối diễn Nôm thuật ngữ media tempestas xuất hiện trong một văn bản Latin năm 1469, sau được biến thể nhiều ngôn ngữ khác[1][2][3]. Trong các tài liệu Việt Nam thập niên 1980 về trước, thuật ngữ này đôi khi được diễn nghĩa tối là trung cổ, nay đã bỏ.

Lịch sử[sửa]

Trung đại là giai đoạn lịch sử tương đối dài, nhưng so với tiền thân là cổ đại, giai đoạn này gắn với sự kiện toàn hóa các thiết chế chính trị và pháp luật để tiến tới kiến tạo mô hình quốc gia, đặc biệt là sự thăng hoa văn nghệ để tiến tới kiến tạo bản sắc quốc gia hoặc thị tộc, ngoài ra báo hiệu sự phát triển thương nghiệp và kĩ nghệ. Đây cũng là thời đại chứng kiến sức công phá tàn bạo của chiến tranh, dịch bệnh và thiên tai, mà nhờ thế làm căn bản cho sự hoàn thiện hóa các lí thuyết về nhân học và cả nhân trị.

Đông phương

Lịch sử trung đại Đông phương thường được coi là giai đoạn vẻ vang nhất, thậm chí có những thời điểm người Đông phương tự hào là trung tâm văn minh thế giới. Tuy vậy, toàn bộ văn minh Đông phương trung đại căn bản tiến triển theo 3 trục :

Tây phương

Lịch sử trung đại Tây phương được phân thành 3 giai đoạn : Sơ kì, trung kì và hậu kì. Theo truyền thống, mốc khởi đầu là năm 476 SCN với sự kiện La Mã đế quốc phân liệt hóa[12], thời điểm kết thúc là năm 1350 khi Hắc Tử Bệnh làm tê liệt hình thái chính trị xã hội lỗi thời và thúc đẩy tiến trình khai phóng toàn diện. Tuy nhiên, quan niệm khác coi mốc kết thúc là 1492 với sự kiện Cristoffa Corombo khởi hành từ Tây Ban Nha dự định sang Ấn Độ và vô tình phát kiến Tân Thế Giới.

Có thời kì dài trong thế kỉ XIX, học giới Âu châu coi trung đại là thời hắc ám bởi ở phần lớn thời gian tồn tại đặc tính hỗn loạn về thiết chế chính trị xã hội và tù đọng về phương diện tinh thần, ngoài ra do tri thức về thời đại này còn lắm tồn nghi. Thành kiến này tới nay đã bị bác do sự phát triển của văn tự học và khảo cổ học.

Văn hóa[sửa]

Sự am hiểu lịch sử trung đại thường cứ theo các tùng thư còn sót lại qua thì gian, nhìn chung chỉ tồn tại ở Cựu Thế Giới. Tuy nhiên, tùy từng giai đoạn và ý thức hệ lại có sự nhận thức khác nhau, thậm chí tìm cách từ khước quá khứ.

Đã nhiều lần tôi đề cập, các chính thể Lý-Trần-Lê-Nguyễn từng tự xưng "Trung Quốc", "Trung Châu", "Trung Hạ", "Trung Hoa", "Hoa Hạ", thậm chí là "Hán", với ngụ ý đất nước văn minh, cộng đồng người văn minh ở khu vực trung tâm, trước khi những từ này trở thành danh từ riêng đặc chỉ "China" từ cuối thể kỷ XIX. "Hán" hay "Việt" ở đây chỉ là vỏ khái niệm, ngầm ý cho biết sự nhận đồng về văn hóa của vua quan Việt Nam so với Trung Quốc. Các triều đại được lập nên ở bốn nước Việt-Trung-Hàn-Nhật đều là những cá thể riêng biệt, đặt định lễ giáo, vận dụng tư tưởng Nho gia, xử dụng văn tự chữ vuông sáng tác văn chương, ghi chép chính sử theo những phương thức riêng biệt.
"Văn bia Dụ lăng" [大越藍山裕陵碑] (tạc năm 1504) viết : "Trung Quốc mạnh mẽ, man di khiếp sợ".
"Đại Nam thực lục" [大南實錄] viết : "Đại Thanh, tổ tiên là người Mãn […]. Xét, Mãn là mọi rợ còn như thế, huống hồ nước ta là đất Nam Hà văn vật, không thể đem so với bọn ấy được" (Đệ nhị kỷ, quyển 26, trang 22) ; "Đất mọi đã lệ thuộc bản đồ của ta từ lâu, dân mọi cũng là con đỏ của ta, phải nên bảo ban dìu dắt, để ngày một nhiễm theo phong tục Hán […]. Phàm những thứ cần dùng đều phải học theo dân Hán, chăm việc làm lụng. Đến như ngôn ngữ thì bảo chúng dần tập nói tiếng Hán. Ăn uống và quần áo cũng dạy cho dần theo tục Hán…" (Đệ nhị kỷ, quyển 163, trang 22).
Những từ "Trung Quốc", "Hoa", "Hán" trong các bản dịch Việt ngữ lưu hành hiện nay, đã bị "đánh lận" và dịch thành "nước ta", "Việt ta", "trong nước". Và lâu nay, dưới nền giáo dục xã hội chủ nghĩa, người ta luôn rao giảng về bản sắc văn hóa Việt, về tinh thần dân tộc Việt, song song với việc diễn giải lịch sử - văn hóa - tư tưởng của các triều đại phong kiến trước đây theo tinh thần mới này. Việc làm này thực chất là đang tự lừa dối chính mình ; nó sẽ ngày một nguy hiểm hơn, khi tư tưởng dân tộc đang có chiều hướng cực đoan và việc bài Hoa (Sinophobia) ngày càng trở nên quá khích.
Một người bạn tôi từng nói : "Trong lịch sử, lần đầu tiên người Việt chống xâm lăng phương Bắc bởi một thế hệ không biết tiếng Hán, bởi một thế hệ trí thức không thể đọc nổi các văn tự gốc viết về lịch sử của chính dân tộc mình !". Và, chính trong lúc sức đề kháng văn hóa - chính trị của người Việt yếu ớt như hiện nay, tôi lại càng nhấn mạnh vào tầm quan trọng của việc học chữ Hán, của việc học và đọc sử. Người Hàn Quốc, người Nhật Bản vẫn học chữ Hán, tuyệt đối không vì họ muốn sáp nhập vào Trung Quốc, mà bởi họ thấy cần hiểu lịch sử - văn hóa - tư tưởng của chính dân tộc họ viết nên trong hơn ngàn năm qua, để gạn đục khơi trong nền văn hóa Á Đông song song với việc áp dụng tư tưởng dân chủ - tiến bộ từ các nước Âu Mỹ. Và hơn nữa, họ hiểu được cách ứng xử của tổ tiên họ với Trung Quốc, cũng như hiểu hơn về chính người Trung Quốc.
