Virus Epstein–Barr (EBV), còn được gọi là herpesvirus ở người 4, là một herpesvirus hướng lympho và tác nhân gây chứng tăng bạch cầu đơn nhân lây nhiễm.[1][2] Virus này cực kỳ phổ biến ở người khi mà ước tính có tới hơn 90% dân số thế giới bị nhiễm.[3] EBV là một gamma-herpesvirus (phân họ Gammaherpesvirinae) giống như virus liên đới sarcoma Kaposi (KSHV) và chúng khác alpha hay beta-herpesvirus ở chỗ có năng lực gây ung thư.[4][5] Một số loại ung thư có thể do EBV bao gồm lymphoma Burkitt, lymphoma Hodgkin, lymphoma tế bào T, ung thư dạ dày và vòm họng.[5]
