Louis Pasteur sinh ngày 27 tháng 12 năm 1822 ở [[Dole, Jura]], Pháp trong một gia đình [[Công giáo]] nghèo làm nghề thuộc da.<ref name="catholic intro">{{CathEncy| wstitle =Louis Pasteur| author = James J. Viện Pasteur đầu tiên cũng được xây trên cơ sở thành tựu này.<ref name="cohn"/>
