Phobos là vệ tinh lớn hơn trong hai vệ tinh tự nhiên của Sao Hỏa.[1][2] Dù vậy nó là một thiên thể nhỏ với kích cỡ khoảng 26 × 23 × 18 km, đường kính trung bình 22 km.[3] Khối lượng của Phobos vào cỡ 1,07×1016 kg,[4] quá nhẹ nên trọng lực không thể biến nó thành hình cầu.[5] Nó có hình dạng không đều và bề mặt rất nhấp nhô với nhiều hố.[5] Vệ tinh này đã bị hàng ngàn vẫn thạch bắn phá và từng gần như vỡ tan bởi một vụ va chạm khổng lồ.[1]
